The Los Angeles Lakers currently sit atop the 2020 NBA Championship odds at the sportsbooks after an Anthony Davis trade now sees him join LeBron James. Read about this and other news in our latest 2020 NBA Championship odds update and preview.
In the wake of a now historic trade for Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green last July, the Toronto Raptors saw their odds to win the 2019 NBA Finals cut in half from (+4000) to (+2000).
That number narrowed to (+1400) by the time the regular season tipped off in October, but Toronto still trailed the Boston Celtics (+500) in the Eastern Conference. And both teams, meanwhile, were miles away from the then two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors, who were odds on favorites at (-195) to notch the coveted “three-peat.”
Fast forward to last week, however, and Leonard’s pairing with Kyle Lowry propelled the Raptors to a 4-2 series win over the vaunted Warriors juggernaut – securing Toronto’s first NBA title in its 24-year franchise history. They did so as big (+230) underdogs against a Warriors (-290) squad which has been widely viewed as unbeatable during their five-year dynasty.
Toronto’s longshot path to professional basketball’s promised land made general manager Masai Ujiri a national hero across Canada, while proving that one bold offseason acquisition can alter a franchise’s trajectory forever.
The Los Angeles Lakers certainly hope that will be the case, after last year’s ambitious gambit to lure LeBron James failed to pay immediate dividends. The Lakers had opened as huge (+10000) longshots to win it all last season, but adding “King James” to a young roster saw the Purple & Gold surge to (+750).
LeBron wasn’t able to carry a poorly constructed team, however, and L.A. finished with a 37-45 record at 10th in the Western Conference.
But with the Warriors in danger of losing superstars Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson in free agency – and both snipers suffering catastrophic injuries in this year’s playoffs – LeBron and the Lakers suddenly saw their path to the 2020 NBA Finals cleared.
And to pave that path even further, the L.A. finally completed a long-awaited trade to acquire All-NBA center Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans. With yet another bold offseason acquisition in the books, online sportsbook Bovada has installed the Lakers as (+250) favorites to win their 17th championship in franchise history by this time next year.
LeBron’s presence alone, coupled with a depleted rival in Golden State, put L.A. at (+500) in the 2020 NBA Championship odds before they snagged Davis from the Big Easy to cut those odds in half. Other teams which were ostensibly in the ‘Brow Sweepstakes saw their title chances fall off precipitously as a result.
The Boston Celtics fell from (+1200) to (+1800), a number which will likely fall much further if Kyrie Irving leaves as a free agent. And with many sports bettors predicting that Irving and Davis would partner up to form the latest NBA “super-team,” the New York Knicks’ odds on claiming the Larry O’Brien trophy fell sharply from (+2000) to (+3300).
The defending champion Raptors, meanwhile, are offering a (+600) price to repeat, but Toronto isn’t even the top contender in its own conference. That honor belongs to the Milwaukee Bucks (+550), a powerhouse that put the Raps in a quick 2-0 hole in the Eastern Conference Finals before bowing out in a shocking 4-2 “mini-sweep.”
Both teams are dealing with impending free agency issues, however, with no potential deal looming larger than Leonard’s next landing place. Only the third player to capture NBA Finals MVP honors for two different teams, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James on the elite list, Leonard will surely have his pick of max-money offers in the weeks to come.
As for Milwaukee, world-ending talent Giannis Antetokounmpo may be locked into a contract for the next two seasons, but major role player producers like Malcolm Brogdon and Khris Middleton are entering free agency.
Accordingly, the odds on either a Raptors repeat or a Bucks title are likely to change drastically as free agency reshuffles the NBA deck.
The same can be said for the Warriors too, as injuries or not, both Durant and Thompson will still command top dollar contracts as free agents. Golden State is in a holding pattern at (+750) to win their fourth title in a six-season span.
