What Is The Largest Casino in the World?

Is the largest casino in the world in Las Vegas? Or maybe Macau? The answer might surprise you, so read on to find out!

In 1989, the face of Las Vegas casinos and the gambling industry was forever changed by the opening of the Strip’s first mega-resort, The Mirage. The 100,000 sq. ft. of gaming floors signaled a change in the landscape of casino gambling.

Gone were the multitude of smaller casinos that had peppered the landscape of Las Vegas in the 1960s, instead they were quickly replaced by larger and larger casino complexes which blended gambling, entertainment, and hospitality as never before.

Once a leader in expansive casinos, The Mirage is now a relatively small casino when compared with some of the truly massive casinos which welcome gamblers across the world.

I delve into the numbers to find the largest casino in the world and, honestly, the answers are truly surprising. So read on to find out what is the largest casino in Las Vegas and what is the largest casino in the world.

10) Rio Casino Resort

  • Klerksdorp, South Africa – 266,330 sq. ft.
  • Standout Feature: Voodoo Beach

The tenth largest casino in the world can be found in the city of Klerksdorp in South Africa. Klerksdorp is located 115 miles South West of Johannesburg and is an historic mining city with a tragic history of British concentration camps during the Second Boer War. The Rio Casino Resort is one of the city’s primary attractions and embodies the energetic theme of the Rio de Janeiro carnival.

Guests can enjoy 274 slot machines, 12 game tables, and frequent poker tournaments. If you need to convince your family, why not also check out Faan Meintjies nature reserve which is only nine miles away. On the reserve, you can spot giraffes, rhinos, and more in one of South Africa’s best birdwatching locations. So if you find yourself in South Africa, why not check out Africa’s largest casino in Klerksdorp!

Offering over 300 slot machines and 109 tables, Ponte 16 is smaller in comparison with some of the other mega-resorts in Macau. That being said, Ponte 16 offers a wealth of entertainment for the whole family. Children can enjoy an Angry Birds themed play area and music fans of all ages can visit the MJ Gallery: a permanent exhibit honoring Michael Jackson and featuring plenty of memorabilia of the King of Pop.

Wynn Resorts’ second foray into the Cotai Strip has led to one of the world’s most well-received resorts. Didn’t I tell you that there were some surprises on this list?

The largest casino in the world is in Thackerville, Oklahoma! Rather than in Las Vegas or Macau, this tiny town of some 445 people host the largest casino in the world. Located only about an hour’s drive from Dallas, Texas, WinStar Wold Casino is owned and operated by the Chickasaw Nation. It is especially popular because of the hostility to online gambling Texas. The casino opened in 2004 and has earned the title of the largest casino in the world via numerous expansions over the years.

Gamblers can enjoy over 100 gaming tables and more than 7,000 slot machines! Although WinStar is off the beaten gambling track, it definitely has more than enough to entice any gamblers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

What is the Largest Casino in Las Vegas?

Perhaps you, like me, were surprised to see no Las Vegas casinos on the list of largest casinos in the world. Indeed, the largest casino in Las Vegas is the Wynn Las Vegas. Connected to its sister resort, Wynn Encore, Wynn Las Vegas offers 191, 424 sq. ft of gaming space to make it the largest casino in Las Vegas.

If our list of the largest casinos in the world has inspired you, but you can’t make the trip to Las Vegas or Macau (or even Thackerville), try an online casino — tead our online casino reviews to find the perfect site to play your favorite online casino games.
