In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, stating the old law prohibiting states from authorizing sports gambling was unconstitutional. The decision allowed each state – via public votes and legislation – to decide whether or not to allow online gambling in the USA, including sports betting and sportsbooks.
Since the Supreme Court’s ruling on sports gambling, several states have embraced the industry with open arms including Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New Jersey, Delaware, Rhode Island, Mississippi, New Mexico New York, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Arkansas, Oregon and Nevada. Other states, like Ohio. only recently launched regulated betting at the start of 2023. Californians chose to vote down competing propositions that would have regulated sports betting as well as other new forms of gambling. However, the defeats are being chalked up to both choices have obvious downsides and not to the lack of popularity for betting.
