Online Baccarat Canada Rules

In baccarat, you’ll increase your edge by taking the time to learn the rules. Luckily, one of the reasons baccarat is so popular is due to the minimal learning curve. Simply: You’re wagering on the outcome of a round of cards between you and the dealer – highest hand wins.

Each card has a certain number of points allocated, and there are “drawing rules” that dictate player & banker behaviour. The most popular variation of baccarat is called punto banco, so we’ll discuss those rules here. The rules for other game types vary slightly.

There are four main stages of a game of baccarat: Place a Bet, The Deal, Instant Win, and Third-Card Rule.

The Third-Card Rule in Baccarat

If neither hand totals 8 or 9, a third card will be drawn with the player going first.

Player’s Rule

  • If a player’s hand totals between 0 and 5 points, the player will be dealt a third card.
  • If a player’s hand totals either 6 or 7 points, they stand.

Banker’s Rule

  • If the player ‘stands’ – i.e. has only two cards – the banker proceeds with the same rules the player had: drawing a third card if they had 0-5 points, or standing if they had 6 or 7 points.
  • If the player drew a third card, there are more complex rules:
Dealer’s Total Points Rule
2 or less Banker draws a card
3 Banker draws a card, unless player’s third card was an 8.
4 Banker draws a card, if the player’s third card was a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7.
5 Banker draws a card, if the player’s third card was a 4, 5, 6 or 7.
6 Banker draws a card, if the player’s third card was a 6 or 7
7 Banker stands.

Online Baccarat Odds

While each online casino’s rules may differ, here is an example of typical baccarat odds for each wager.

Odds of Player Bets

Player bets typically pay even money (e.g. bet $100, win $100).

The house edge for this type of bet is a relatively low 1.24%, making betting on yourself a tempting baccarat strategy.

Odds of Banker Bets

Banker bets typically pay even money, less a “commission” on the win, typically around 5%. This means a payout of approximately 95% on banker bets (e.g. bet $100, win $95.)

The house edge for banker bets is even lower than player bets, sitting at approximately 1.06%.

Odds of Baccarat Ties

Ties in baccarat are paid out differently by each casino, but typically pay out at either 8- or 9-to-1.

Tie bets do have a very significant house edge of nearly 15%, so we recommend avoiding this bet type.

Avoid Tie Bets

As tempting as that payout may be, avoid betting on the tie. The payouts are high for a reason – betting on the tie just isn’t worth it.

Bet on the Banker

It feels weird to bet against yourself, but there’s a reason casinos’ put a “commission” on banker bets – it happens more often.

Ignore “Streaks”

Tables simply don’t get “hot” or “cold.” The mathematical odds and house edge remain the exact same regardless of the previous result, so trust the process.

Card Values in Online Baccarat Canada

The card values in baccarat are very similar to other casino table games like blackjack, except when it comes to face cards and tens:

  • Cards 2-9 are worth their face value (e.g. a 4 is worth 4 points)
  • 10 and face cards are worth zero
  • Aces are equal to 1

Online Baccarat Scoring

It’s very important to remember when scoring a round of baccarat: if the total points in your hand reach double digits, you drop the first digit.

For example:

  • You have a 7 and a 9, for a total of 16
  • Because 16 is double digits, you drop the first digit
  • Your 16 becomes a 6, meaning you have 6 points in your hand

Baccarat Variants

There are a few different variations of baccarat, but there are two main types: punto banco and chemin de fer.

Punto Banco

If you are playing online baccarat, it is most likely Punto Banco. As we described above, one hand is designated for the player, while the other is assigned to the banker. Participants choose to wager on a win by the player, win by the banker, or a tie.

Player bets usually pay even money, while a five percent commission is taken out for banker bets. In the rare case of a successful tie bet (a “push”), payouts are typically 8:1, and the wagers for player and banker roll over to the next round.

Chemin de Fer

Chemin de fer involves six decks of cards that are shuffled together. One player becomes the banker, and the rest become “punters.” Just like the blinds in poker, the role of banker/dealer rotates. The banker then places an initial bet, which can be met or exceeded by the punters. At this point, the player with the highest bet is elected (“chief punter”) to represent the rest of the punters.

Both the banker and the chief punter receive two cards face down. If neither has an 8 or a 9, the elected punter can choose to take a third card or stay. The general strategy for chemin de fer baccarat is:

  • If you hold between 0 and 4, you take a third card, and if you have a 6 or 7, you don’t.

If the banker wins, then they collect all the wagers and keep their position for another round. In the event of a player win, each bettor gets back their wager plus an equal amount from the banker.

Baccarat Banque

In this variant, the banker holds their spot until they retire, go bankrupt, or all cards have been dealt. The role is given to the player who is willing to take the biggest risk. Otherwise, the game is played very similarly to Chemin de Fer, but with three decks instead of six.

Live Dealer

Live dealer baccarat is exactly what it sounds like. Through a webcam, a live dealer will play against you so you can experience the thrill of a land-based casino from the comfort of home. No need to turn on your camera or microphone – there is usually a chat function for you to communicate with the dealer. You can play most versions of baccarat with a live dealer, from punto banco and chemin de fer to less popular variants like baccarat banque.

European Baccarat

European baccarat is played similarly to blackjack. Both the player and the banker can choose to stand or draw a third card if their current card total is five.

Three Card Baccarat

Three card baccarat follows the same rules and structure of regular baccarat, except the player and the banker are each given three cards instead of two.

Mini Baccarat

Mini baccarat is essentially a smaller version of the regular game. The stakes are usually lower and the table (virtual or physical) is smaller in size. Other than those differences, the game is played the same way that Punto Banco is played.

Lightning Baccarat

Lightning baccarat introduces a feature that adds multipliers to up to five cards. If the cards with multipliers are part of the winning hand, the multipliers provide players with boosted payouts. The multipliers can go up to 8x so the game adds a lightning fee of 20% to the total bets of each player.

Playing Mobile Baccarat

The best casinos will have multiple options that let gamblers play their favourite baccarat game from anywhere they want. You can enjoy playing baccarat from the comfort of your couch with your iPhone or Android devices. The only thing you need is a device to play and an internet connection. Baccarat is a great game to play on a mobile device, with the simple controls you can set the stake and bet with ease.
