Just over a year after MGM Resorts and GVC Holdings announced a 50/50 sports betting and online gambling partnership known as Roar Digital, the companies’ flagship app PlayMGM has been rebranded as BetMGM.
The Las Vegas-based MGM Resorts joined forces with the Isle of Man-based GVC Holdings back in July of 2018 to launch Roar Digital. Within a month, the PlayMGM online / mobile sports betting app – which previously operated in Nevada – went live within New Jersey’s regulated iGaming market.
PlayMGM – which operates under the land-based Borgata casino’s iGaming license in Atlantic City – eventually expanded to include all three iGaming verticals: sports betting, casino games, and poker.
In a press release, Roar Digital’s chief executive officer Adam Greenblatt suggested that the launch of BetMGM represents more than a simple rebranding campaign:
“Today’s an exciting day as we launch the rebranded and upgraded BetMGM app in New Jersey.
We’re thrilled to be able to give our customers bigger and bolder opportunities to enjoy our games and the unique experiences, like Early Cash Out, that BetMGM will provide as the professional and collegiate football seasons get underway.
We believe our product takes the in-game entertainment value to the next level.”
Scott Butera – who serves as the president of interactive gaming for MGM Resorts – echoed those sentiments while hyping BetMGM as an “upgrade” rather than a rebrand:
“The mobile gaming industry’s future is on a steep incline, we are harnessing best in class mobile technology from Roar Digital, powered by GVC.
We expect this significant upgrade to our mobile experience to complement MGM’s proven retail presence and allow us to immediately compete in New Jersey, and future states when mobile gaming is approved.”
The chief executive officer of GVC, Kenny Alexander, offered the following comments on BetMGM’s use of his company’s proprietary technology:
“The combination of the power of MGM’s brand alongside GVC’s state-of-the-art technology and online sports-betting expertise will ensure that the BetMGM offering is at the forefront of the US sport-betting opportunity.”
Among the new additions found on the BetMGM app are the Early Cash Out feature – modelled after a feature offered in European markets for years now – which allows bettors to lock in winnings or diminish losses by settling their wager immediately based on the current score and game conditions.
Bet MGM will also provide a singular account wallet which provides for “seamless and unlimited” movement of money between a bettor’s sportsbook, casino, and poker room accounts.
Bettors using BetMGM will also benefit from daily “boosted” wagering promotions, which attach attractive odds and/or point spreads to designated games.
The BetMGM app will also allow for real-time bet tracking via continually updated scoreboards, along with widened banking functionality attached to PayPal, Skrill, and Play+.
BetMGM is available for download via the Android and Apple app stores, but the casino vertical is currently not offered on Apple devices using iOS.
