With teams in the NHL approaching the 60-game plateau, the playoff chase is well underway. And with all but four of the league’s 31 teams currently within 10 points of a postseason berth, Lord Stanley’s Cup could be claimed by almost any of them. Here’s a look at the updated 2019 Stanley Cup odds.

2019 Stanley Cup Odds: Lightning Strikes to Heavy Favorite Status

When the opening odds on the 2018-19 Stanley Cup championship were posted back in late September, the bookmakers at Bovada had the Tampa Bay Lightning (42-11-4; 88 points) listed at second overall with (+850) odds.

That number tied Tampa Bay with the Winnipeg Jets (36-18-3; 75 points), while both powerhouses were ranked just behind the Toronto Maple Leafs (35-18-3; 73 points) at (+700).

But even with the Jets clearing the Western Conference pack by four points, and the Leafs owning the second-best point total out East, the Lightning have taken a stranglehold as massive (+280) favorites on the 2019 Stanley Cup odds. Winnipeg and Toronto managed to improve their standing to (+650) each, but Tampa Bay has accumulated 13 more points than any other team in hockey to push towards odds-on favorite status.

The Lightning are fueled by RW Nikita Kucherov and his NHL-leading 88 points, who has sent many of his 63 assists to Brayden Point (fourth in NHL with 33 goals) to form a formidable tandem.

Tampa Bay topped the East last year before falling short in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final. Falling short at the penultimate step before the Stanley Cup final, on home ice no less, certainly stung, so the Lightning will be more motivated than most teams to finish things off this time around.

Defending Champs Backsliding; Surprise Contenders Coming for the Crown

That Lightning loss at home in Game 7 sent the Washington Capitals (31-19-7; 69 points) through to the Stanley Cup final, where Alex Ovechkin finally hoisted the silver chalice for the first time in his storied career.

Ovechkin is only 33 years old, but despite playing his 17th season as a pro – in Russia and the NHL – the “Great Eight” still has the good stuff. His 38 goals scored lead all of hockey, but that hasn’t been enough to push Washington into the league’s upper echelon this season.

The Capitals are only four points clear of the final Wild Card spot, and at 4-4-2 in their last 10 games, continued late-season struggles could see them become just the fifth defending champ to miss the postseason tournament. Accordingly, the team’s odds on a repeat title have fallen from (+1100) to (+2000).

Washington defeated the Vegas Golden Knights (31-23-4; 66 points) to win it all last summer, and like the Caps, the first pro team in Sin City is struggling to match last year’s success.

Although Vegas has a seven-point cushion on a playoff spot, the Knights’ 3-7-0 run in their last 10 doesn’t bode well.

Vegas also opened at (+1100) on the 2019 Stanley Cup odds and currently offer a (+1600) price, but there might be a new upstart to shock the league like the Knights did in their inaugural season.

After opening at (+3300), the Calgary Flames (34-16-6-; 74 points) have surged to just one point off the West lead – improving to (+650) for the second-best odds in hockey.

Not to be outdone, the New York Islanders (33-17-6; 72 points) and Montreal Canadiens (31-18-7; 69 points) both began the year as (+10000) longshots, before improving to (+1500) and (+1800), respectively.
