Home run records fell in a classic Derby on Monday, and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game went down on Tuesday. And as always, the annual Midsummer Classic provides the perfect time for sports bettors to check up on each team’s latest 2019 World Series odds.
Trio of Top Contenders Holds Steady
The last time we visited online sportsbook Bovada to size up the 2019 World Series futures betting board was back in early May, when teams had roughly 25 percent of the schedule in their rear-view mirror.
At that time, the 2017 champion Houston Astros led the way at (+450), followed closely by the two-time consecutive runner-up Los Angeles Dodgers and the perennial postseason powerhouse New York Yankees. Fast forward two months later and not much has changed, with the Dodgers (+270), Yankees (+333), and Astros (+375) all clear of the pack by at least a 2 to 1 margin.
The Dodgers don’t appear the least bit deterred by losing two straight World Series, having stormed out to an MLB-best record of 60-32. The boys in blue boast the largest divisional lead in baseball with a 13.5-game cushion in the N.L. West, along with a +129 run differential that puts L.A. 16 runs clear of the Yankees (57-21) and a whopping 39 runs past the Astros (57-33).
As for the Bronx Bombers, a deadly home run hitting lineup and deep bullpen has staked New York to a 6.5-game lead in the A.L. East. And with a nine-game lead over their archrivals from Beantown, the Yanks have forced the defending champion Boston Red Sox (49-41) to watch their own odds of repeating balloon from (+1500) in May to (+2500).
In Houston, ace Justin Verlander recently let the league have it regarding his “juiced ball” suspicions – a byproduct of both his own MLB-leading homer allowance rate and the old-fashioned eyeball test.
Despite the rapid rise of longballs league-wide, however, the Astros’ sterling pitching staff has surrendered just 367 runs, good for the second-lowest total in the A.L. All told, the Astros look to be well on their way to a third straight A.L. West title with a healthy 7.5-game lead over the Oakland Athletics (50-41 / +3500).
Given all three of these teams’ recent regular season success – not to mention their playoff pedigrees – their collective status as the clear 2019 World Series favorites is certainly well-deserved.
Parity Reigns Supreme in Middle of the Pack
The only other teams offering better than 10 to 1 on a World Series title are the Atlanta Braves (54-37) and the Minnesota Twins (56-33), who are priced at (+800) and (+850), respectively.
Atlanta has cruised to a six-game lead over a depleted Washington Nationals (47-42 / +2800) squad in the N.L. East. It’s been a roller coaster ride for Braves backers, with the team opening at (+1400), stumbling to (+2300) with an early May swoon, and rocketing back up the betting board as its divisional competition has dropped off.
Minnesota has opened up a 5.5-game lead over the Cleveland Indians (50-38) in the A.L. Central while riding a hot-hitting lineup to a surprisingly successful season. After opening as (+7500) longshots to take the title, the Twins have crossed the plate 509 times to tie with Boston for the MLB lead.
From there, no less than 10 teams occupy baseball’s middle class by offering odds between 20 to 1 and 50 to 1 on a title.
