- Authentic | +125 Odds
After the Triple Crown was postponed, the 145th Preakness Stakes is trailing behind the Kentucky Derby to the delight of bettors everywhere who thought the major horse racing event would be postponed.
The usual fanfare will be missed, as the 2020 Preakness Stakes will be held without spectators, but fans should be happy the Triple Crown is happening at all this year. If these changes aren’t enough, this year’s Preakness will count as a ‘Win and You’re In’ qualifier for the Breeder’s Cup in early November.
Kentucky Derby Re-Cap
The Kentucky Derby surprised everyone with an upset from Authentic and trainer Bob Baffert, who led the entire derby about ¼ mile into the race with Tiz the Law trailing behind. Tiz the Law was the favorite to take the Triple Crown, after his Belmont Stakes win, but since being upset has dipped to odds of +400 while Authentic is the favorite to take the Preakness, too at +125.
Tiz the Law did come in second however, finishing 1¼ lengths behind Authentic.
2020 Preakness Stakes Odds
Authentic’s trainer Bob Baffert was suspended for 15 days in July 2020 when two of horses, Charlatan and Gamine tested positive for lidocaine, which is considered a performance-enhancing substance for horses—But this didn’t stop him, and Baffert’s on track to take this part of the Triple Crown.
Two of Baffert’s horses have won the Triple Crown before, with American Pharaoh taking the 2015 Triple Crown and Justify taking the 2018 Triple Crown. Baffert is tied for most wins in Preakness history, and altogether his horses have won six Kentucky Derbies, seven Preakness Stakes and three Belmont Stakes. So, it’s fairly likely Authentic will take the win again—But will they lead the majority of the race this time?
Art Collector didn’t compete in the Kentucky Derby due to a foot injury, but don’t count this horse out for the Preakness. Trained by Thomas Drury Jr., Art Collector won the 2020 Ellis Park Derby with jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. Drury Jr. is known for taking good care of his horses but not having a high percentage of wins, however, gaining Art Collector during the winter of 2020 has given him his ‘big break’—This break could extend to a Preakness win, but time will tell.
One thing to note—Authentic fell behind Honor A P and Art Collector in terms of odds before the 2020 Kentucky Derby, so don’t count out Thousand Words, Mr. Big News or Swiss Skydiver, either.
Another Baffert-trained horse, Thousand Words is a contender to take the Stakes at odds of +800. Thousand Words has finished first in the Shared Belief Stakes, Robert B. Lewis-G3, MSW and the Los Alamitos. Like we mention earlier, Baffert has many Triple Crown race wins under his belt, and this could very well be Thousand Word’s ‘time to shine’ and take the yellow-flowered blanket.

GO Team: 2020 Preakness Stakes Betting Pick
Our top betting pick for the 2020 Preakness Stakes is Tiz the Law—If you’re looking to diversify your bet from the clear favorite, we recommend Tiz the Law. Tiz the Law was a favorite to win the 2020 Kentucky Derby (even with a 17 program number—it’s worth noting no horse with a 17 post has run the Derby) and won the 2020 Belmont Stakes and the Travers Stakes.
Plus, Tiz the Law could very well seek ‘Derby revenge’ from Authentic, who was the front-runner to win the Triple Crown—Tiz the Law isn’t a sure bet, but it’s as close as it’ll come.
