Just over a year ago, the Global Poker Awards show on PokerGO was one of the bookmarks than defined how poker descended into the COVID-19 pandemic. The last show of hands, before everyone took a chair and sat down at a table they couldn’t leave.
What Happened When the GPAs Were Awarded in 2020
A matter of days before much of the western world was forced into lockdown, poker celebrated the great and good’s achievements in 2019 by putting on a glitzy ceremony at the 2019 Global Poker Awards in March 2020.
Since then, poker has, of course, changed immeasurably. From live venues closing down, festivals being cancelled and the bricks-and-mortar element of gameplay now with additional plexi-glass dividers and masks at the table to cover 50% of facial tells, online poker rose up and became the saviour of the game.
Last year, this reporter was watching to see if a nomination turned into an award, not in Las Vegas but at home. I’d been offered two seats at the party, but had spent the Las Vegas plane ticket money on food and warmth. Instead, I watched along as the glitzy ceremony took place.
How This Year’s Announcement Took Place
With no Global Poker Awards in 2021, it felt like tuxedos and dresses were a thing of poker’s past in many ways. Indoor clothes had replaced the ‘going out’ look. Poker had been indoors for a year. Then Jeff Platt talked to Eric Danis this week, and there was almost a sigh of relief from the industry. Just knowing that there is an awards ceremony coming in a year’s time is the news poker fans have been wanting to hear.
It’s great news that not only will the 2022 GPAs take place in Las Vegas and be broadcast on PokerGO, but the 2023 and 2024 shows will be too. All three years of the Global Poker Awards are to be hosted at the PokerGO Studio at the ARIA Resort & Casino in Sin City itself.
Streaming live on the PokerGO platforms, the 2021 Global Poker Awards are sure to be a smash hit.
“We are honored to be a part of celebrating the accomplishments of the most renowned figures in the poker industry,” said Eric Danis himself, President of Global Poker Index and The Hendon Mob. “After having to cancel this year’s ceremony due to the pandemic, we are so excited to welcome the poker world once again to the Global Poker Awards in March 2022 and for years to come.”
Which Awards Can We Expect to See?
This year’s gap in the schedule will only make poker fans more desperate to catch a glimpse of their favourite players when the gongs are handed out in around 11 months’ time.
One of the most prestigious awards between players will be the much-anticipated People’s Choice Award for Hand of the Year, as it’s voted for by poker fans. There are plenty more juicy categories that will be scrapped over, however.
With awards such as GPI Player of the Year, GPI Female Player of the Year, Poker ICON, Players’ Choice Award for Best All-Around Poker Player and more, there’s a lot of fun to be had on the night.
“The Global Poker Awards recognize and celebrate the most elite poker players and significant figures making a notable difference in the industry,” said Mori Eskandani, President of PokerGO. “We aim to give credit to those who make a splash in our sport, and holding these awards in the PokerGO Studio for the next three years allows us to do so.”
We can’t wait to see how the next three years of poker action unfold!
