- Jimmy Garoppolo got benched in the 49ers' loss to Miami
- Rams, 49ers are last two Super Bowl runners-up
- Los Angeles strength of schedule to-date is suspect heading into matchup
The Rams defense held Washington to 2.1 yards per play in their 30-10 victory over the Football Team. Sean McVay’s club improves to 4-1 overall and 3-2 against the spread after covering -7 on the road.
Jimmy Garoppolo’s return from an ankle injury was spoiled as he was outplayed by Ryan Fitzpatrick and eventually benched because of it in the Dolphins 43-17 drubbing of San Francisco on their home turf. Eight-point favorites heading in, the Niners drop to 2-3 SU and ATS in what has been a forgettable start to the season for last year’s Super Bowl runner-up.

San Francisco opened as 3-point home favorites, but the Rams efforts against Washington combined with the 49ers meltdown against the Dolphins flipped the odds script with Los Angeles 3.5-point road favorites as of Monday afternoon. The 49ers moneyline is +150 at most online sportsbooks. The point total opened at 49, but has jumped to 50 / 50.5 after several outlets.
In their past three meetings, San Francisco is 2-1 straight up, Rams are 2-1 against the spread and the OVER has hit two-out-of-three times. And get this, they both averaged 28.67 points per game in their three games.
Los Angeles Rams News and Notes
Quarterback Alex Smith’s return to the field for the Washington Football Team was an incredible moment in sports history. To celebrate, the Rams pass rush held a sack party in his honor. Smith, whose leg was mangled in a gnarly on-the-field injury, returned to the field two years after the freak accident. After completing a pass on his first play, Smith was then sacked six times and Washington’s offense never found a rhythm. Aaron Donald, who finished the game with four sacks, was part of the reason the Football Team was held to 2-for-13 on third downs, just 10 first downs, 2.1 yards per play, and 108 total yards for the game.
It was a dominant performance by the Rams defense against an inferior offense.
So, through five games, the Rams have:
- Beaten the Cowboys, 20-17
- Beaten the Eagles in Philadelphia, 37-19
- Lost to the Bills in Buffalo, 35-32
- Beaten the Giants, 17-9
- Beaten the Redskins, in Washington, 30-10
I’m not quite sure this resume to-date makes me want to BUY stock in the 4-1 Rams. Let’s toss out Week 1’s win because there was an abridged training camp and no preseason games. The Eagles are terrible. Los Angeles trailed by double-digits for most of the Bills game and rallied back, only to blow a lead in the end. The Giants are terrible. The Redskins are terrible.
Consider me a seller of the Rams heading into Week 6.
San Francisco News and Notes
Fitzmagic is real and it toppled another regime this past weekend.
“I’ve been called every name in the book,” Ryan Fitzpatrick said after the Dolphins blowout win over the Niners. “People hate me, people love me, depending on the week.”
As of Monday, it’s the 49ers who loathe the veteran journeyman. Though hobbled by injuries, San Francisco’s heralded defense allowed the Dolphins to average 6.9 yards per play on offense, more than a yard more per play than their season average. The depleted roster combined with an on-going Super Bowl hangover saw the Dolphins score a touchdown on three of its first four drives.
On offense, the team’s franchise quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, returned after missing the previous two games with an ankle sprain, but looked wobbly in the pocket. It was just the fourth time in his last 19 regular season starts that Jimmy G. tossed 2-or-more interceptions in a game. He finished 7-for-17 for 77 yards before being benched in favor of C.J. Beathard. His 15.7 quarterback rating was fourth-worst in franchise history dating back to 1979.
Bottom line, this team needs to get healthy. The Dolphins attacked the 49ers secondary, which was without Richard Sherman, Emmanuel Moseley and K’Waun Williams. Williams and Sherman are out indefinitely, while Moseley remains in concussion protocol and might not be cleared in time for this Sunday’s game.
Betting Pick: 49ers +3.5 / OVER
This seems like a trap game for the Rams as it will be Los Angeles’ fourth road game in five weeks, with the three previous contests occurring in the Eastern Time Zone. Due to San Francisco’s laundry list of injuries, I’m more confident in the OVER hitting than I am in the Niners covering the three-and-a-hook. Jimmy G and George Kittle need to rekindle their rapport and bring a much-needed win to Levi’s Stadium.
