Bovada.lv Sportsbook Review

Rating 4.9/5

Bovada is one of the oldest online gambling companies on the Internet. Back in 1994, Canadian billionaire Calvin Ayre launched Bodog as a consultant for online operators. In 2001, Ayre launched Bodog as an online casino, poker site, and sportsbook. When the UIGEA was passed in 2006, Calvin Ayre sold the brand to Morris Mowhawk Gaming Group (MMGG). MMGG eventually converted Bodog into the UK and Canadian side of the business, while launching Bovada as the US-facing online casino, bookmaker, and card room.

Bovada has 25 years of experience in the online gambling industry. Today, we review Bovada’s sports betting product. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of Bovada Sports, including their moneyline, point spread, and proposition bets. We provide a juice table, along with the full rundown of deposit and withdrawal methods. Our guide to Bovada Sports also discusses the mobile version of the site. We give information on how to reach customer service, while providing a handy FAQ to discuss any questions you might have after reading this online review.

Sports and Odds Available

When you first arrive at Bovada Sports, you’ll find on the main menu categories for football, basketball, hockey, soccer, tennis, golf, live betting, and “All Sports”. The site also has quick links along the left side of the page for NBA Game lines, College Basketball, NHL Game Lines, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, ATP Delray Beach Open, and CONCACAF Champions League.

The middle of the sports homepage is dominated by live betting odds. Using a tool, you can spot live in-play bets grouped by American odds, fractional odds, or decimal odds. Bettors also can search for bets using an internal Bovada search engine. A tool on the right-hand side of the page shows your current betting slip and all the open bets you’ve have. A handy help section link is available underneath those tools. If you scroll down the page, you can find the upcoming betting events under the title “Next Events”.

Bovada has the full list of sports betting options. Below is a list of the betting types available.

Bovada Bets Available

  • Point Spreads: Weighted odds in which the favorite must cover the spread. Underdog bets win even if they lose by less than the spread.
  • Moneylines: If you don’t like point spreads, make a moneyline wager on who wins the game outright. Favorites have the – symbols and underdogs have the + symbol.
  • Totals: Also called an Over/Under bet, it is a wager on how many points or goals will be scored in a game, regardless of winner.
  • Parlays: Three or more bets on separate events. To win a parlay, all bets must hit. Parlays tend to have high payouts.
  • Teasers: You can combine your bets on two games. Bovada even allows you to adjust the point spread, but your payout will be smaller.
  • Futures: Long term wagers, such as who will win a league title or a league MVP.
  • Proposition Bets: Also called prop bets, these are wagers on stats or events during a sporting event.
  • Entertainment Prop Bets: Prop bets on celebrities, scandals, or events in the entertainment industry.
  • Political Prop Bets: Prop bets on politicians, elections, or political scandals.
  • Live Betting: Live in-play sports betting apps allow wagering on dozens of prop bets during a game.

Mobile Options:

Bovada is compatible with iPhone and Android users, but there is no app available in the App Store and Google Play Store for Bovada. No mobile app is required to make your Android smartphone or tablet computer, iPhone, or iPad compatible with Bovada. Because its instant play games open in the web browser, simply navigate to the site and begin making sports bets instantly.

At one time, Bovada had an Android app, but it has been removed from Google Play. Also, B-Ovada has an app, but it is not the official gaming app, so avoid it. Besco puts out a Bovada Bet Tracker app which is available on the Apple App Store, but it does not allow players to place bets. Instead, it tracks the history of your bets when playing on Bovada.

Juice at Bovada

The juice is the commission a sportsbook charges on bets. Also called the vigorish or vig, the juice is the equivalent of a poker rake. Bettors should know Bovada uses dual lines. That isn’t a problem for casual gamblers, but it means handicappers might not get the same advantageous betting lines. In effect, the juice might be higher for some bettors. Runline and puckline bets have the standard +1.5/-1.5 adjustment, so the vig is used to adjust for heavy favorites or underdogs.

Sport – Bet Type – Juice
  • NFL – Pointspread – 10 cents
  • NFL – Moneyline – 10 cents
  • NFL – Totals – 10 cents
  • NHL – Moneyline – 10 cents
  • NHL – Totals – 10 Cents
  • NHL – Puckline – Variable
  • MLB – Moneyline – 20 cents
  • MLB – Totals – 20 cents
  • MLB – Runline – Variable
  • NBA – Pointspread – 10 cents
  • NBA – Totals – 10 Cents
  • CFL – Pointspread – 10 cents
  • CFL – Moneyline – 10 cents
  • CFL – Totals – 10 cents

American football and Canadian football moneyline bets are offered only when the point spread is between 3 and 10. If the spread is either 3 or 10 exactly, then a moneyline is offered only when the line is standard (-110).

Basketball moneylines are offered when the point spread is between “Pick ‘Em” and 15. If the spread is either PICK or 15 exactly, then a moneyline is offered only when the line is standard (-110). Soccer moneyline bets have three possible outcomes: pick either of the teams or pick a draw. If you pick a draw and the match goes into extra time, the punter loses the wager.

Deposit Methods:

Players have five options for deposits at Bovada: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Bitcoin, and Bitcoin Cash. The fee to make a deposit using Visa, MasterCard, and Amex is 5.9% of the deposit. For that reason, the actual minimum deposit for credit cards is $20 plus the 5.9% or $21.80. Credit card deposits have a $500 max limit, while Bitcoin has no limit. All deposits arrive in your player account instantly.

Is there an option we recommend?

Yes, we recommend Bitcoin, because the deposit is done almost instantly and it immediately converts into USD once on site to take away from the volatility of the cryptocurrency. Also, players have no fee when they make a Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash deposit at Bovada.

FAQ section:

American players might have questions about the legality of sports betting in their home country, state, or city. The United States is a patchwork of state and federal laws, so it can be complicated. Read through the questions below for the answers you seek.

Is Bovada a safe sportsbook for Americans?

Yes, we recommend Bovada.lv because it is owned by an established, respected company with many resources. Bovada is a trusted brand which has been online since 1994. American gamblers will find no more established operator. Bovada has the most common payment methods with fast, safe, and secure payouts. With so many years in the business, you know Bovada Sports has the operating cash to pay out winners.

Is online betting legal in the United States?

Online betting exists in a gray area in most US states, but experts agree bettors aren’t in danger of being pursued by the DOJ for placing bets at an online shop. No online gambler has ever been prosecuted by the Department of Justice or state agencies, though organizers might be blocked or prosecuted. The actual law varies state-to-state and several jurisdictions have legalized single-state online sports betting: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Mississippi, Nevada, West Virginia, and Rhode Island. Those states have land-based sportsbooks and sports betting apps, but interstate online sports wagers are illegal.

Most US states do not legalize online sportsbooks, poker sites, or casinos. They have no specific laws which ban on online gambling, but it is not legalized and regulated. Please research the federal, state, and local laws where you live to know your legal rights and responsibilities, but until further notice, remember that bettors will not be prosecuted for placing bets at online sites.
