Hold and Spin with Fish Awarding up to 5 Jackpots
Striking animations of a coral reef behind the reels help Tropical Fish from WMS stand out on the casino floor. Once you start to spin you’ll find this is far from the only attraction. There are stacked symbols, big jackpots and a picks game which involves the small screen below the reels. Fish look bright and have cheeky expressions. Everything about this slot is aquatic – you won’t find a single playing card or other filler symbol on the reels.
Underwater themes have been popular for slots for many years. Tropical Fish stands out for the excellent production – and has a lot of features to enjoy.

You won’t be able to miss the bonus symbols. These are clam shells, with a sparkling pearl inside. You need a minimum of 3 anywhere in view to trigger both the bonus and a scatter win.
Instead of a ‘look up’ message (like you’ll find on many wheel-based slots) you’ll see ‘look down’. The first part of this bonus takes place on a lower screen, the one you use to choose your bet size and start the spins.
You will see this covered in bubbles. Above, the screen is filled with coloured shells, each giving a different number of free spins between 5 and 20. This game is simple, you pick bubbles, unlocking gems, until you fill the 3 spots on one of the shells. Along the way, you might find an ‘upgrade’ symbol. This adds one to your win multiplier, which applies to all the free spins. The default is 2x, with this number rising by one for every upgrade.
When the free spins start, the reels match those in the base game. You can trigger the bonus again, or the jackpot picks game while these spins take place.
While you spin some of the reels will be covered in an orange glow. This bubbles quickly away, with an animation where light hits the treasure chest on the upper part of the cabinet. Usually, nothing happens. Occasionally the chest will become animated – and you start a bonus feature.
The reels now become a black grid, and you get 3 spins. Every symbol spins independently, with a mix of fish, gems and coins flying past. You need to get as many of these in view before your spins run out. Every time you hit a new symbol, your spins reset to 3.
Coins give you smaller cash wins, gems bigger ones – and fish trigger one of 5 progressive jackpots. There is a colour-coded list to the left-hand side explaining which fish pays which jackpot.
The action takes place over the usual 5-reel, 4-row reel setup. What is unusual are the super-stacked symbols. Each spin sees one fish taken at random, which populates long strips on the reels. Your biggest wins will come from those times you cover several reels with the same fish. Ideally, this is the yellow, glowing, fish which has the biggest prize.
In addition, you can get wild reels. These tie-in with the orange glow which triggers the jackpot game. Sometimes the colour drains away, leaving a wild reel in its place. There are also single wild symbols in play.
Fish have the bigger prizes, with other tropical ocean creatures at the lower end of the pay table.
Coral reef views behind the reels of underwater slots are nothing new. WMS has done a brilliant job of bringing this one to life – with animations like fish swimming past and waving seaweed. The symbols are all boldly coloured, and full of character.
While you spin, a Caribbean style calypso tune plays. In the jackpot spins game, the reels go dark, and the timing is perfectly produced to up the excitement levels. Having bubbles to pick on the control panel gives this game a unique feel.
An impressive design helps Tropical Fish stand out – though it is the depth of features which are the highlight. These include wild reels, super-stacked random symbols and a free spins bonus where you pick bubbles to win spins and multipliers. Best of all, the popular hold and spin format is in use. This includes 5 progressive jackpots, as well as some generous cash wins.
