About Live French Roulette

French roulette is one of the most popular variations of the classic game, but not the most common! In fact, many casinos are reluctant to offer French roulette because it has a low house edge compared to the American and European versions. For this very reason, we recommend always choosing the French version over the other two if you have the choice.

Live French roulette is available at select online casinos and gives you the chance to experience the thrills of an in-person casino from anywhere through the power of the internet. When playing a live game, you’ll join an online casino for real money and play for real cash, while communicating with a dealer working at a physical roulette wheel.

3. Receive Winnings

In a game of live French roulette, your winnings will be automatically credited to your account. The game will then begin again with a new round!

French Roulette Rules

The key difference between European roulette and the French version lies with two important rules, La Partage and En Prison. Casinos tend to offer one or the other in the French game by default.

La Partage

La Partage translates to ‘the divide.’ The rule is only in play in French roulette for even money bets (odd/even, red/black & 1-18/19-36) and means that when the ball lands in the green zero slot, the player’s losing stake is divided. The house will keep half, while half is returned to the player.

En Prison

As you’ve probably worked out, En Prison translates to ‘in prison.’  Like La Partage, this rule applies only to even money bets. If the ball lands in the green slot, the player’s losing bet will remain ‘in prison’ on the board. On the next spin, it is either released back to the player (if the bet was correct) or swept away and kept by the house (if it lost).

Differences Between French Roulette and Other Roulette Tables

French Roulette vs European Roulette

The only difference between French roulette and European roulette is what happen with two sided bets when the ball lands on zero. If you are not playing two sided bets, your winnings won’t change between French roulette and European roulette.

If you are playing two sided bets exclusively, or at least very often, you will benefit from la partage or en prison rules as the house edge is reduced to half on two sided bets. On European roulette house edge is 2.70% on two sided bets whereas on French roulette the house edge on two sided bets is reduced to 1.35%.

French Roulette vs American Roulette

French roulette and American roulette are complete opposites when it comes to the house edge. It is the zero pocket that gives the casino house edge and American roulette carries it further with adding another zero pocket, raising the house edge even more. On the other hand, French roulette lowers the house edge caused by the zero pocket to a half.

From a player’s perspective, French roulette offers better value but again, this doesn’t change much if you don’t place two sided bets regularly. You will benefit equally from a normal European roulette with a single zero pocket.

French Roulette House Edge

As previously mentioned, the house edge in live French roulette is low. In fact, at just 1.35%, it boasts one of the most player-friendly odds of any game. That said, keep in mind that the house edge depends largely on your playing style and which bets you make. Here are the types of bets and their probability of paying off.

Bet Type Probability Payout
Odd/Even, Red/Black or High/Low 48.64% 1:1
Column or Dozen 32.4% 2:1
Six Line 16.2% 5:1
Corner or Four Number 10.81% 8:1
Trio or Street 8.11% 11:1
Split 5.41% 17:1
Straight 2.70% 35:1

French Roulette Call Bets

There are wagers that are unique to French roulette. You can wager on different sections of the wheel or groups of numbers with call bets. On online roulette sites, you will find these bets on a separate layout from the main roulette table.

French Roulette Strategy and Tips

Stick to Even Money Bets

If you are not sure what you want to bet on, it’s better to stick to even money bets. They are simple and one of the safest bets on a French roulette table. The payouts are going to be low but you have the chance to double your bet if you win.

Play With the La Partage Rule

Try to play online French roulette with the la partage rule whenever it’s possible. La partage rule allows you to get half of your bet back on even money bets if the ball lands on the zero pocket. Don’t forget that the house edge lowers to 1.35% with the la partage rule.

Always Bet Within Your Bankroll

While playing French roulette or any other casino game, make sure you have a bankroll set aside. Remember to only bet with the amount of money you can afford to lose and try not to go over your limit.

Ignore Hot Numbers

Some online French roulette games will track hot numbers. We advise you to not let this have an influence on your bets. All the spins on the roulette are random and cannot be predicted.

French Roulette Live vs RNG

It’s no secret that we enjoy live games here at Gamble Online, but they’re not for everybody! Like all things in life, they come with benefits and disadvantages, especially when compared to their Random Number Generated (RNG) counterparts. RNG games are web-based, automated games which can be played for real cash too. Unlike live games, they do not rely on video streaming technology and use software to determine the outcome of each spin. Here are the pros and cons of live French roulette games:

Pros

  • Communicate with other players and the dealer via live chat
  • Added excitement and thrills
  • Cutting edge software makes the game feel real
  • Wide range of stake sizes on offer

Cons

  • Sometimes limited seats at live roulette games
  • Slower pace compared to RNG games
  • No free play options
