A Beginners Guide to Baccarat Online

Baccarat is a popular casino game made famous in part by James Bond. The iconic film character played Baccarat in four feature films and the game was an integral plot point in creator Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel, Casino Royale. The game was replaced in the 2006 film version as Texas Hold’Em was exploding in popularity. Online baccarat is a casino table game that appeals to all players from veteran high rollers to newbie gamblers.

Part of the appeal of playing baccarat is that the learning curve is minimal and most players can pick up the game within a few hands. The great part about playing on the internet is most casinos will allow you to play online baccarat games for free. After playing free Baccarat for a dozen hands, even a novice player will be confident enough to start playing for real money.

Welcome to GambleOnline’s 2020 guide to baccarat casino online. In this guide, you’ll find:

How do you play online Baccarat?

The best reason to play baccarat is for the rush and the favorable house edge. However, if you don’t take a few minutes to learn the basics, you can bleed through your bankroll quickly.

Place a Bet

The game starts with you placing a bet on your hand, the banker’s hand or a tie. You are picking who you think will win or if you think there will be a tie. Our casino experts strongly recommend never betting on a tie as the payout isn’t worth the odds.

The Deal

Two cards are dealt to both the player and the banker and the total value for everyone is presented.

Instant Win

If either the player or banker’s hand reaches eight or nine points, that score wins the game. No more cards are dealt and the winning bet is cashed out.

3rd Card Rule

If a player’s hand totals between zero and five points, the player will be dealt an additional card. However, there are certain baccarat rules for both the player and the bank. If the value of the player/the bank’s is 8 or 9, then no extra card can be drawn. This is known as a “Natural.”

The banker plays will be determined by the player hand. If the player hand stands, the banker will hit on values of five and below. If the player draws a card, the banker will do the following:

  • Hit on zero, one or two
  • Hit on three if the player’s extra card is anything other than 8
  • Hit on 4 if the player’s extra card value is two through seven
  • Hit on 5 if the player’s extra card is valued at four through seven
  • Hit on 6 if the player’s extra card is six or seven

The main difference in the baccarat strategies for the banker and player is in the fact that the banker’s draws will depend on the player’s finished hand. The banker only drawing a card if the player takes one helps that hand and is the reason for the difference in win percentages.

Online Baccarat Card Values

The hand values in baccarat are similar to other casino card games, except when it comes to face cards and 10s.

  • 2 to 9 — Equal their face value
  • 10, Jack, Queen and King — Equal to 0
  • Ace — Equal to 1

If the total in your hand reaches double digits, then you drop the first number.

If either the player or banker’s hand reaches eight or nine points, that score wins the game. No more cards are dealt and the winning bet is cashed out.

Ex. 7+9 = 16 which becomes 6.

OR

Ex. 6+4=10=0

Holding a total of zero is considered to be “Baccarat.” In this second example, an extra card would be received.

What are the Two Main Types of Baccarat?

There are two types of baccarat: Punta Banco and Chemin de Fer.

Punto Banco

If you are playing baccarat at online casinos, it is most likely Punto Banco. As we described above, one hand is designated for the player, while the other is assigned to the banker. And participants can choose to wager on a win by player or banker or a tie.

Player bets usually pay even money, while a five percent commission is taken out for banker bets. In the rare case of a successful tie bet, payouts are 8:1, and the wagers for player and banker roll over to the next round.

Chemin de Fer

Chemin de fer involves six decks of cards that are shuffled together. One player becomes the banker, and the rest become “punters.” Just like the blinds in poker, the role of banker/dealer rotates. The banker then places an initial bet, which can be met or exceeded by the punters. At this point, the player with the highest bet is elected to represent the rest of the punters.

Both the banker and the chief punter receive two cards face down. If neither has an 8 or a 9, the elected punter can choose to take a third card or stay. The general baccarat strategy is:

  • If you hold between 0 and 4, you take a third card, and if you have a 6 or 7, you don’t.

If the banker wins, then they collect all the wagers and keep their position for another round. In the event of a player win, each bettor gets back their wager plus an equal amount from the banker.
