Travelers Championship Best Bets – Favorites

Bryson DeChambeau (+1200)

Bryson DeChambeau celebrating

There were a few solid sports betting options among the favorites. Dustin Johnson, of course, is the defending champion and is showing signs of shaking out of his slump. Brooks Koepka doesn’t seem to care unless it’s a major championship. Patrick Cantlay and Paul Casey also have good track records in Connecticut.

However, we’re going with DeChambeau, who has finished in the top 10 three years running here. He was in the lead briefly at Torrey Pines in California before a back-nine collapse where he shot 44. DeChambeau, who was the defending US Open champion, is going to a place where he can drive the ball as far as he wants, and the rough isn’t even close to being what it was at Torrey Pines. It’s a short course, where birdies are aplenty as Johnson won with a -19 score, and there hasn’t been a single-figure winning score since 1993; everything has been between -10 and Kenny Perry’s record of -22. It’s a course that DeChambeau can make look silly if he is on. If he can just avoid focusing on his feud with Koepka, he’ll be fine (we, the golf world, will not be fine if that happens).

Travelers Championship Best Bets – Contenders

Abraham Ancer (+2800)

We mentioned that Ancer has missed two straight cuts, at the Porsche European Open in Germany and at the US Open. However, he had been quite steady prior to that, and TPC River Highlands is the perfect place for Ancer to get back on track. He has finished T8 and T11 in each of the last two years in Connecticut.

Ancer isn’t long, but that doesn’t matter at this course and he’s sixth on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy. Ancer is also 30th in Shots Gained: Approach The Green and 48th in SG: Putting. He isn’t going to overpower the course like DeChambeau could, but Ancer will find fairways and greens, and if his putter is working, he could win his very first PGA Tour title.

Travelers Championship Best Bets – Longshots

Rickie Fowler (+6600)

Rickie Fowler watches his golf shot

It has been a struggle for Fowler lately. He failed to qualify for the Masters and the US Open, although he did finish T8 at the PGA Championship. Fowler followed that up with a T11 at the Memorial Tournament. That T8 was his first top-10 since the 2019 British Open (unless you count a solo ninth at the 2019 Hero World Challenge, which is an unofficial event hosted by Tiger Woods, and the field has just 18 players).

You don’t need to see the numbers on Fowler this year. His best showing is a ninth in SG: Around The Green, but he’s usually there because he doesn’t hit many greens and he hasn’t putted well. But every player has tough stretches and Fowler seems to be coming around. Also, he recently announced that he and his wife, Allison, are expecting their first child. A little perspective could be all that Fowler needs to get back on track (no pun intended, his wife is a former track athlete).
