American League East Division Odds 2023: Red Sox to Struggle Again

Oddsmakers aren’t expecting much of the Boston Red Sox this season.

Outlook Bleak for the Red Sox

Sports betting fans will remember that the Boston Red Sox were considered one of the American League’s big-spending powerhouses and were coming off a trip to the ALCS, a six-game loss to the Houston Astros just two years ago.

Last season, MLB betting fans will recall that little went right for Boston, especially in terms of injuries to the pitching staff. The Red Sox cratered to a 78-84 record and last in the AL East Division.

Unlike past seasons, ownership wasn’t quite as aggressive financially in this past offseason for an immediate fix. Fan favorite All-Star shortstop Xander Bogaerts wanted to finish his career in Boston, but the Red Sox weren’t up to matching the money the San Diego Padres offered, so Bogaerts walked.

The Red Sox’s biggest splash of free agency was a five-year contract worth reportedly $90 million for Japanese outfielder Masataka Yoshida. The 29-year-old won the Nippon Professional Baseball batting title last year, but he’s still a major question mark making the transition to the US big leagues.

The Sox did very little to address the rotation. The team is hoping that perennial Cy Young candidate Chris Sale can stay healthy, but he hasn’t been able to for a few years.

The latest sports betting odds have Boston as a +1600 long shot to win the AL East this season. That it finishes fifth again is the +125 leader on exact position. The Red Sox have an over-under of 77.5 wins. If they finish under that, the jobs of Manager Alex Cora and front office boss Chaim Bloom will be in major jeopardy.

Yankees Look to Repeat Success

The New York Yankees won the AL East by nines game last year and are +105 favorites to repeat per the best online sportsbook sites. They haven’t done that in the division since 2012. The Bombers won free agency simply by not letting 2022 AL MVP and home-run record-setting free agent Aaron Judge leave for his hometown San Francisco Giants. The Yankees also added one of the top starting pitchers in lefty Carlos Rodon.

The rotation did take a recent hit with the news that Frankie Montas, acquired from Oakland last summer in trade, might miss the season due to surgery. What is really angering Red Sox fans, though, is watching the Yankees return to their big-spending ways and Boston not joining in.

The Toronto Blue Jays (+220) finished second in the East last year and the Tampa Bay Rays (+335) third, with both reaching the Wild Card Round but losing in it. The Jays focused on pitching and defense in the offseason in adding defensive standouts in the outfield like Kevin Kiermaier (formerly of the Rays) and Daulton Varsho. Tampa Bay doesn’t spend a lot of free-agent money because it doesn’t have any, yet there is no smarter organization.

Baltimore (+1600 to win the AL East) was one of the most improved teams in the 2022 season, and the sky could be the limit for this young, rising team with the best farm system in baseball and two of the early favorites for AL Rookie of the Year. Will it spend to compete?

That an AL East team wins the 2023 World Series is a +275 co-favorite with the NL East, home to the favored New York Mets.
