NFL Coaching Odds: Vance Joseph Favored To Land Arizona Job

The Arizona Cardinals have their GM. Now they need a coach.

All Change at the Arizona Cardinals

Experienced NFL betting fans will know that NFL teams generally hire the GM first before the head coach. The GM is of course the coach’s boss and will have expectations for the organization and its direction.

There are occasions where a club might hire the coach first if he’s also the de facto GM, somewhat like the Las Vegas Raiders used to have with Jon Gruden. He was only a coach in title but had say over all personnel. That was an unmitigated disaster, and nowadays teams keep the jobs separate and hire the GM first.

Which brings us to the Arizona Cardinals. This past summer, they gave GM Steve Keim and coach Kliff Kingsbury rather puzzling contract extensions. Ownership ended up eating millions of dollars when both were fired after a hugely disappointing 4-13 season when the team was 11-6 the year before and reached the playoffs.

Arizona’s new GM is now in place: Monti Ossenfort, the former director of player personnel with the Titans. He was with Tennessee for the past three years and the New England Patriots for the 15 years before that. His hiring marked the first time in 30 years that the Cardinals hired a general manager from outside the organization.

Who might Ossenfort hire to replace Kingsbury? Let’s break down the online sports betting favorites and look at the latest sports betting odds.

Latest Arizona Cardinal Head Coach Odds

Vance Joseph (+275)

Current Cardinals defensive coordinator and former Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph is the +275 favorite for the head coach position.

Often, when a team fails with an offensive-minded coach (which former coach Kingsbury was), it then goes defense the next time and vice versa. Arizona’s defense had improved each year under Joseph through his first three seasons at DC, allowing 27.6 points per game in 2019, 22.9 in 2020 and 21.5 in 2021. However, that unit allowed 27.2 ppg this season, second-worst in the league.

Brian Flores (+325)

The Miami Dolphins shocked real money sports betting fans by firing Brian Flores after the 2021 season, and he’s the +325 second favorite. Flores spent this past year as a senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Some think Flores, who is Black, might be black-balled by league owners because he sued the NFL and a few teams last year (not the Cardinals) alleging a pattern of racist hiring practices by the league.

Sean Payton (+475)

Former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton (+475) is the biggest name among the betting options but in demand just about everywhere and any team that hires him likely will have to give the Saints a first-round pick in compensation. The Cards pick No. 3 overall this year and aren’t giving that up but perhaps a future first-rounder. Payton could get the best out of QB Kyler Murray, who is likely to miss the start of the 2023 season recovering from a torn ACL.

Shane Bowen (+900)

One rather unknown candidate is Titans defensive coordinator Shane Bowen (+900), and obviously he’s very familiar with the new GM Ossenfort. Tennessee allowed only 21.1 ppg this past season and was No. 1 against the run. Former Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich (+1200) already has interviewed with the team, and he’s an offensive guy.
