Men’s Royal Rumble Match – Cody Rhodes

The Men’s Royal Rumble Match is possibly the biggest ‘what if‘ of this event. If The Rock does decide to return to WWE, undoubtedly he will win the Rumble and face his cousin, Roman Reigns. At the time of writing, it remains unclear whether or not The Rock will come back which means that Cody Rhodes is both the bookies’ and my favorite to win.

The ‘American Nightmare‘ has been absent since tearing his pectoral muscle back in June. Rhodes put on a literal 5-star match against Seth Rollins in Hell in a Cell while sporting a beyond unsightly bruising that cemented his superstardom. Rhodes has been teasing his comeback in recent weeks and it is well known that he has his sights set on the WWE Championship, a title which has eluded the Rhodes family for decades. With Rhodes confirming his participation, I think that these Royal Rumble odds are great for an almost sure-fire winner.

In my opinion, Sami Zayn is a dark horse contender for the Rumble. The Honorary Uce has been absolutely killing it as part of the Bloodline, but his position in the stable remains tenuous at best. If Zayn were to somehow overcome the odds and win the Rumble, it would be an amazing culmination to his storyline and be very ‘Ucey‘ indeed!

For my money, Cody Rhodes is the favorite and the safest pick to win the Men’s Royal Rumble Match. However, I would also recommend placing a wager on The Rock as he would become the favorite if he decided to appear. At +350 Royal Rumble odds, bettors would do very well if The Rock does make a shock return in the Rumble!

Women’s Royal Rumble Match – Becky Lynch

The 2023 Women’s Royal Rumble match is less clear cut than the other Rumble match, meaning that there are some fantastic odds available currently. The current favorite is Rhea Ripley who has been dominating Raw as part of The Judgment Day. ‘Mami‘ has been distracted as of late by her relationship with Dominik Mysterio, meaning she has been focused on bailing Dom out of jail rather than taking championship opportunities.

I’m not convinced that Ripley will win the Rumble as I feel that Becky Lynch is positioned to become the first woman to win two Rumble matches. Lynch returned to action at Survivor Series: War Games and is embroiled in a conflict with Damage CTRL. That being said, the recent return of Charlotte Flair as Smackdown Women’s Champion creates a massive matchup between two of the best women in WWE.

It’s little secret that there is backstage animosity between Lynch and Flair but this would be the biggest and most anticipated bout of either competitor’s career. Although it long seemed that Lynch and Ronda Rousey were on an eventual collision course, the rumors suggest that this is no longer the case. At +325, the Royal Rumble odds are fairly good for Lynch and well worth a shot!

Beyond Ripley and Lynch, I think the dark horse could be Raquel Rodriguez. Rodriguez had an amazing title match against Ronda Rousey back in December 2022 but an arm injury was exploited by the champ. Rodriguez has been presented as a strong contender and undoubtedly a future champion. Perhaps the Rumble could be her opportunity? At +500, I would definitely hazard a wager on Big Mami Cool to win it all in her home state!

Undisputed WWE Universal Championship Match – Roman Reigns

It’s hard to argue against Roman Reigns right now. His Undisputed WWE Universal Championship reign now stands at over 860 days. He has beaten Brock Lesnar, Drew McIntrye, Edge, Bryan Danielson, Goldberg, and Logan Paul amongst plenty of other legendary names.

Kevin Owens has been a frequent thorn in the side of the Tribal Chief. Two years ago at the 2021 Royal Rumble, Reigns overcame Owens in a gruelling Last Man Standing match in controversial fashion. Since then, Reigns has gone on to dominate WWE while Kevin Owens went on to main event WrestleMania against the legendary Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Although Reigns’ reign is now in its third year, I do not think that Kevin Owens will be the man to dethrone the Head of the Table. In my opinion, this match is perhaps more interesting with regards to the relationship between Sami Zayn and the Bloodline. It will be interesting to see what happens between Zayn and his longtime friend Kevin Owens as it might have major WrestleMania implications.

Raw Women’s Championship Match – Bianca Belair

The EST of WWE Bianca Belair was surprised twice by Alexa Bliss over the last month. A backstage attack was followed by an unhinged Bliss brutalizing Belair, resulting in an injury requiring stitches. The normally composed and focused champion is unsettled by the challenger who is in turn stalked by Uncle Howdy, the same shadowy figure associated with Bray Wyatt.

On paper, Belair has the size, strength, and speed advantage over Bliss. Although Alexa Bliss is a five-time world champion, Belair is a generational talent who has impressed again and again. While I don’t think that Alexa Bliss will dethrone Belair, I do feel that the eerie atmosphere of Uncle Howdy could make an impact at the Royal Rumble.

Pitch Black Match – LA Knight

Officially the Mountain Dew Pitch Black Match, as part of a promotional tie-in, Bray Wyatt will mark his return to televised action against the brash LA Knight. Wyatt’s highly anticipated return has excited fans the world over, but mystery still surrounds the former WWE Champion.

WWE betting fans were left flummoxed by the shocking character of Uncle Howdy, a curious figure who stunned the world by delivering a Sister Abigail to Wyatt on Smackdown. Many assumed that Uncle Howdy was either another personality of Wyatt’s, similar to the Fiend, or perhaps an ally. But this shocking turn may prove to be Wyatt’s undoing at the Royal Rumble.

There are few details as to what exactly a ‘Pitch Black’ match will entail, but I think that the bookies may be overstating Wyatt’s advantage. Wyatt’s return is still throwing up twists and turns, so I think that a wager on LA Knight would be a smart bet. With Royal Rumble betting odds of +500, LA Knight could provide the upset of the night!

Most Eliminations in the Women’s Royal Rumble Match – Raquel Rodriguez

Unsurprisingly, the two favorites to score the most eliminations are also two of the most powerful women on the roster. Rhea Ripley scored seven eliminations in 2021 and I totally believe she could do it again. However, I would back Rodriguez as I believe she is less likely to win the Rumble. Remember: no woman has won the Rumble after scoring the most eliminations.

Most Eliminations in the Men’s Royal Rumble Match – Solo Sikoa

The enforcer of the Bloodline Solo Sikoa is the favorite here and I’m inclined to agree with the bookies. Sikoa has been channeling his uncle, the late, great Umaga to devastating effect as of late and I believe he could be very effective in his debut Rumble. On the other hand, the Intercontinental Champion Gunther could well be a dark horse.

Will Anyone Outside the the WWE Roster Enter the 2023 Royal Rumble?

We will almost certainly see a wrestler from outside the WWE roster compete in one of the Royal Rumble matches. Last year, Impact Knockouts Champion Mickie James entered the Women’s Royal Rumble in a historic moment.

If a wrestler who is signed to another company were to appear, my bet would be an Impact talent. In all honesty, I wouldn’t be surprised if Mickie James were to return after recently recapturing the Knockouts title.

Although Karl Anderson recently competed for NJPW at Wrestle Kingdom 17 in Japan, the would would be stunned if an NJPW or Stardom talent were to appear. But with the way things happen in pro wrestling, who knows!

Will Sasha Banks Return at the Royal Rumble?

Sasha Banks was the biggest pro wrestling free agent in the world before she made her highly anticipated return to the ring at Wrestle Kingdom 17. The newly named Mercedes Moné confronted IWGP Women’s Champion Kairi at NJPW’s biggest event of the year, setting up a title match at Battle in the Valley.

As such, it is unlikely that Sasha Banks will return at the Royal Rumble in 2023. BetOnline does offer +10,000 odds for Sasha Banks to win the Royal Rumble. Banks is now signed with NJPW so I don’t believe that it’s likely we will see Banks enter this year’s Royal Rumble match. Regardless of the contractual implications, Mercedes Moné is still one of our top ten wrestlers we want to see in the WWE Royal Rumble 2023.

Will CM Punk Enter the Royal Rumble 2023?

CM Punk returning to pro wrestling was one of the biggest stories of 2021. Unfortunately, this was ultimately followed by CM Punk’s dramatic implosion at the All Out media scrum and subsequent alleged physical confrontation with the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega, derisively nicknamed ‘Brawl Out’. CM Punk has not been seen on AEW programming since September and was stripped of the AEW World Championship.

As it stands, the possibility of CM Punk returning to AEW seems unlikely, especially in the short term. But, to the best of our knowledge, Punk is still under contract with AEW so he will not be appearing at the WWE Royal Rumble. Could Punk ultimately return to WWE? That remains to be seen, but stranger things have definitely happened.

The Royal Rumble will air live at 8pm ET / 5pm PT on Saturday, January 28th. Royal Rumble will be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
