From Bad to Worse for Carson Wentz
NFL betting fans will know that the Washington Commanders have made a lot of questionable moves in recent years, but perhaps none worse than last season trading for Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz. Washington made a concerted effort to sign Wentz even though the Colts may well have released him due to poor form.
Wentz was a bust in his one season in Indy and a bust this past season in Washington, throwing for 1,755 yards with 11 TDs and nine picks in eight games. Coach Ron Rivera gave Wentz one last chance to save his Commanders career on New Year’s Day as Rivera started Wentz in a must-win game against Cleveland – he had been hurt and then the No. 2 behind Taylor Heinicke – but Wentz was truly horrid in throwing for 143 yards and three picks in a 24-10 loss that ended Washington’s wild-card hopes.
There was no chance Wentz would be back after that, and he has officially been released. The move saves Washington $26.176 million on the salary cap this offseason. The Commanders ended up trading two third-round picks and swapping second-round picks in 2022 to acquire Wentz from Indianapolis. Yikes!
While Wentz’s career as a starting QB might be finished in the NFL at age 30, the former No. 2 overall pick in the draft should be in demand. Wentz has potential as a quality backup and can sign ASAP with a team because he was released instead of having to wait until the new league year starts March 15.
