Super Bowl 57 Cross-Sport Props with PGA Tour Phoenix Open

The Phoenix area hosts not only the Super Bowl but a PGA Tour event this weekend.

Sports

This weekend, the greater Phoenix area is the epicenter of sports as it not only hosts Super Bowl 57 between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, but also the highly attended Waste Management Phoenix Open, a PGA Tour event, from Thursday to Sunday. The Super Bowl is being held in Glendale and the golf tournament is located about 30 miles away in Scottsdale.

This is the fourth time the Phoenix area has hosted both events simultaneously. In 1999, the PGA Tour event was shifted to Wednesday through Saturday, but that won’t be the case this time. The last time this double happened was in 2015 and Jordan Spieth, among other PGA Tour players, made the quick drive after the tournament to watch the big game. Spieth also plans to do it again this year.

Let’s break down some cross-sport props involving Super Bowl odds and the PGA betting odds for the WM Phoenix Open, which boasts eight of the world’s top 10 players, and determine which event is greater.

Hurts Involved in Two Props

Jalen Hurts, the quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, is the betting favorite to win Super Bowl MVP, and the sports betting odds for his passing yards in Sunday’s game are at +145, while the winning total score of the Phoenix Open is at -175. Although Hurts averaged 246.7 passing yards per game in the regular season, he has averaged just 137.5 passing yards per game in these playoffs, even if Philadelphia won both games easily. The winning score of last year’s Phoenix Open was 268 (16 under par) when Scottie Scheffler defeated Patrick Cantlay in a playoff. The tournament record for the winning score is 256 set by Phil Mickelson in 2013.

As one of the best running quarterbacks in the NFL, Hurts had an average of 51 rushing yards per game in the regular season, with a high of 157 yards. The betting odds for Hurts’ rushing total on Sunday are +175, compared to the lowest 18-hole score at the WM Phoenix Open, which is set at -215. The tournament record for the 18-hole score at TPC Scottsdale is 60, set by several players, but not since 2013.

The winner’s age of the Phoenix Open is the favorite bet (-260) over the total points scored by the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday (+200). During the regular season, Philadelphia led the NFC in scoring with an average of 28.1 points per game, and they have maintained an average of 34.5 points in their two playoff games. The betting favorites to win the golf tournament are 33-year-old Rory McIlroy, the No. 1 player in the world, and 28-year-old Jon Rahm, who is the No. 3 player in the world and has won four of his last six worldwide events.

Rahm is a local favorite, having starred collegiately nearby at Arizona State. Defending Phoenix Open champion Scheffler is 26 years old, while Patrick Cantlay is 30. Two-time tournament winner Hideki Matsuyama is 30 years old. Scheffler is looking to become the first golfer since Matsuyama (2016-17) to repeat as champion in Phoenix. Matsuyama looks to become the fourth golfer in Tour history to win the WM Phoenix Open three times.
